Free incoming calls from next year Minister for Mass Communication Imthiaz Bakeer Markar announced that all incoming cellular calls will be free of charge from January 1, 2004. He made this announcement when Celltel launched its fourth phase of GSM expansion recently. The move will result in an 80 per cent increase of coverage and capacity in the outstations. The company also introduced its GSM expansion 'Brand Icon' - a hot air balloon - at the Town Hall grounds in Colombo last week. In Phase 4, Celltel while expanding its reach down the Southern Coast will also expand its coverage in the suburbs of Kandy and cities such as Hatton, Akuressa, Deniyaya and Embilipitiya. Celltel will also enter the East with the upcoming launch of coverage in Ampara and Trincomalee. With the completion of Phase 4, Celltel will start planning its fifth phase of GSM expansion which would increase GSM coverage by 250 per cent. The company said it is planning to take the hot air balloon to some selected locations where Celltel is expanding its coverage. To date, Celltel's investment in Sri Lanka amounts to US$ 72 million. Currently, it is the No 2 player in the local cellular phone industry. Celltel's Commercial Director Aniljit Singh said: "With the likely announcement of Calling Party Pays in the near future, Celltel is gearing to meet increasing customer demand and expectations, as penetrations of cellular phones are likely to explode". |
