"Tool room" to take industrialisation to villages by Hiran H. Senewiratne The Government will promote the tool room concept in the country in a move towards taking industrialisation to the village level. The Ministry of Industries has presented a white paper to the Parliament seeking approval to enhance rural industrialisation. The tool room concept is one project that has been planned under the Government's grass root level industrialisation programme. The Government will invest Rs 500 million by next year for this purpose and money will be raised through the Indian Line of Credit. The Government intends to invest five million rupees for each tool room. "Tool rooms are a fundamental need for a country to expedite grass root level industrialisation," said Minister of Industries Rohitha Bogollagama. He said these tool rooms turn out industrial parts and components, specially mechanical parts of any machine, for local enterprises. The Government intends to set up 100 industrial tool shops or rooms around the country before next year. Each tool room will employ 12 youth who will be trained at Hindustani Motor Training Centre at Nikeweratiya, Minister Bogollagama added. This concept was practised by many industrialised countries like Japan and Germany and even India to establish a proper local industrial base in the country, the Minister added. The Government expects to initially generate 1200 employment opportunities in the country. This will also help generate more employment opportunities throughout the country, he added. These youth will be employed to turn out mechanical parts to serve local industrialists in villages. The centres will be equipped with modern technology to cater to the increasing demand for such work. |
