Gospel Music their forte

It's not the beginning of rock 'n roll but it's certainly the beginning of a rocking revolution in the local western music industry.

It's about the beginning, "pauses Navin, the leader of the band and continues," well, we were on the lookout for a name which was ultimately chosen among a whole lot of different names," he says.

Noah's Ark comprises Messak on bass Roshith on drums and vocals, Milinda on key-boards Navin on guitar and Natasha Makalanda on backup drums The reason why they don't play anywhere at the moment, is because they don't have a permanent vocalist since their vocalist left the band. "But we are glad we can manage since Roshith does both singing and playing and I too sing a bit, although I prefer concentrating more on my guitar.

Noah's Ark says that they're into Gospel and Classic Rock and Blues." I came to music through Gospel music. I've got strong desires to play Gospel because it's like a message. Personally I'm not only into Gospel. My exposure into other music goes back to late sixties," he says.

Their tastes differ but when it comes to rock the guys say that they like stuff such as 'Deep Purple'. 'Led Zeppelin', and 'PinkFloyd'. "But most of our music is original stuff, we don't play much covers and even if we play a handful of covers we do it our own way. So that it doesn't sound alike.

For example we do 'let it be' by Beatles on an up tempo beat". Navin reveals the guys say that they don't like the idea of being mercenary. "Basically Gospel music is not played for money and our target is not to play at a night spot. We just do it for the kick of it. But obviously we won't turn down such offers either," Navin grins.

Talking about their original music Navin says that the lyrics to the melodies are composed by Roshith. "And I compose the music". He says. According to him the first song which is called "I sang' it talks about a person who has been with god for so long, but left him somewhere down the line for no reason just to come back to him at the end of peace and serenity. "Our second song is called 'king of kings' talks about the second coming of God. Its lyrics and music were composed by me. Our last song is called 'song of Jesus'.

That talks about a guy whose trust was put in many people just to be shattered at the end. It talks about how that person came to God to sing for him at the end", he says. The rest hasn't been completed yet, they say. "The three songs were just three months work" Navin says.

Their major gig has been "On Stage", this year. "We started practices in April and worked hard which is how we put our demos for On Stage before June, and we were selected for the preliminary round and then to the finals" Navin goes back in time. "We sang the three originals and the response was pretty good. Basically the idea was not to win but to have a nice time in the presence of people who were there. The guys needed exposure. We played what God has gifted to us," they say and continue, "we wanted to place our hearts out. We didn't feel sorry that we didn't win. Playing at the finals alone was a good break for us. It was a huge challenge" they say that on stage was like the beginning of their progress as a professional band.

Speaking of the local western music scene, Navin says there is clear difference in the field. "There were people who played in commercial bands and played covers. But now lots of musicians do original music and that's a very good sign. It's nice to see the new band concentrating more on more originals, Navin says. They thank the Rock Company for promoting the original talents. "The Rock Company helps the young musicians to come up with whatever that runs riot deep inside. Rock Company is definitely a blessing specially during a period when we lack proper funding."

Getting back to the rock scene the guys say that Rock Music is their passion. "We love it, some say it's demonic some say it's too noisy. But I think it's just the way we express what we feel deep within us." Navin continues "and we love all the local Rock Bands and respect them what they play.

Noah's Ark talks about themselves as a band. "We have little argument when we don't sound right. But at the end of the day we are cool we are good friends." Not forgetting the people who are behind their existence the guys thank the Rock Company, all the members of Ezra, "they backed us up even during", On stage' plus we've got to thank, Norman Vittachi for all that he's done for us", They said.
