Jaffna District takes mixed title...

Double strike by Mercantile at Inter-Association netball

Mercantile Netball Association netballers won the Inter-Association Netball Championships while Jaffna District Netball Association took the Mixed Netball title at the inter-association netball championships jointly organised and conducted by the Interim Committee of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka and Anuradhapura District Netball Association and played last weekend at the Public Playground, Anuradhapura.

The special feature of the championships was the triumph of Jaffna District Netball Association in the mixed netball event for the first time.

Sixteen teams played in the inter-association netball tournament and the Mercantile Netball Association, Colombo DNA, Matara DNA, Jaffna DNA, Sri Lanka Schools NA, Kandy DNA, Nationalised Services NA, Kurunegala DNA entered the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals Mercantile NA beat Sri Lanka Schools NA and Colombo DNA beat Kandy DNA.

In the final, Mercantile Netball Association registered a comfortable 35 goals to 14 win against Colombo District Netball Association. Sri Lanka Schools NA were placed third.

National player Arunika Kurawita of the Mercantile Netball Association was picked as the Netball Queen.

Jaffna District Netball Association emerged champions in the Mixed Netball Tournament, defeating Free Trade Zone Netball Team in the final by 11 goals to 8. Vavuniya DNA took third place.

The special awards went to - Mixed Netball - Best Defence Player-Sudumani Avali (Jaffna DNA), Best Shooter - K. Visidaran (Jaffna DNA), Up and coming player - Amila Prasantha (Free Trade Zone). Inter-Association Tournament - Best Defence Player-Gayathri Lankathilaka (Mercantile NA), Best Centre Court Player - Anjali Lokuliyana (Colombo DNA), Best Shooter-Shashika Samarasinghe (Mercantile NA), Most Promising Player-Gaya Jayaweera (Matara DNA) Netball Queen-Arunika Kurawita (Mercantile NA).
