Mok Kee Pam in the lead at Sri Lankan golf classic by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN - Kandy Sports Correspondent Japanese Mok Kee Pam with a good nett score of 48 led the third day of the 8th SriLankan Airlines Golf Classic organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and sponsored by the SriLankan Airlines and co sponsored by Premadasa Holdings, MTV, Carlsberg and Hemtours as ground handlers which is being at the Victoria Golf Course at Rajawella. Over 180 golfers from 14 countries participated in this Golf Festival which drew tremendous interest both locally and internationally with no less than 14 media organisations from abroad covering this event which rated as one of the biggest ever golf competitions ever to be held in the island. The tournament is being played in two batches with the first batch playing their first and second rounds on the first two days, which was dominated by the locals. The second batch played on the second and third days and the results of these rounds will be analysed before arriving at the winners of the various competitions and 23 air tickets are on offer to the various destinations flown by the SriLankan Airlines. Japanese Mok Kee Pam who arrived in the island the previous day was quick to come to terms with the course and fairways and came up with the best score of 48 Nett which is the highest recorded up to the third day in this tournament. He returned to the club house shortly after 6.30 pm and his performance eclipsed the previous best of 46 Nelt by another Japanese Kochi Ayoma who got 46 Nett earlier during the day. Mok Kee Pam who looks set for a grand double also obtained the best gross score of 32 which was equalled by Andrew Salem and J. C. B. Lay. But the day's most exciting performance came from Sixteen year old South African schoolboy Andrew Ludlow when he made a mighty hit which covered a distance of 361 yards to set up a new record at Victoria for the longest drive. Andrew Ludlow's epic feat bettered the existing record by 30 yards according to Club official Carl Kelaart who provided this correspondent with some useful information. Andrew Ludlow is a Year 11 student at Qatar International School. He beat the two other contenders for this title Binupa Wijesinghe and Alain Gyi - a usually brilliant player was not at his usual self that day. Sri Lankan Niloo Jayatillake was in the lead with a Nett score of 38 on third day. She was ahead of Nancy Koo (36), Vanessa Harrison (35), Suwen Selvaratnam (32), Dhinuka Boralessa (32) and Chen Maylin (33). The Gross score was led by Poh Serene SH with 30 followed by Suwen Selvaratnam (25), Dhinuka Boralessa (23), Niloo Jayatillake (24), Thats the story at the end of the first round on the third day by the second batch. Stefania Renevery from Zurich leads the race with 71 nett points and behind her are Indira Tibblin (65) and Carmen Slater (64). The competition is still wide open and many good scores are expected on the fourth day in which top golfers from abroad are expected to compete. Former Vidyartha College cricketer Sam Gunaratne led the men's nett competition with 77 points largely due to second day score of 42 nett. Behind him are Nimal Amerasinghe (75), Mike Emott (72), Maxim Felsinger (72), Sahil Malhothra (71) Paul Heyman (70).
