Renouk Wijemanne to play in four Futures tourneys by LAL GUNESEKERA A former Sri Lanka national champion Renouk Wijemanne is billed to play in four Futures Tennis Championship (each worth US Dollars 10,000) in India and Thailand before the end of this year (2003). Wijemanne played in the two Futures tournaments in Colombo, but failed to impress. He first plays in Pattaya (Thailand) from November 10 to 16 and then moves into Dehraten in India from November 17 to 23, Delhi from November 24 to 30 and Mumbai from December 1 to 7. A spokesman for the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) told the Sunday Observer that only Renouk Wijemanne confirmed his participation, but Rajiv Rajapakse, had not done so up to date, though he too was billed to play in Futures Tournaments before the end of this year. The Secretary of the Tournament and Matches Committee of the SLTA, Irshad Othman will represent the country at the meeting of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to be held in Bangkok, Thailand on December 5 to finalise various ITF programmes for next year, including the Davis Cup and Federation Cup. Meanwhile, the Mercantile Championship is scheduled to be worked off at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath on November 8,9,15 and 16, while the Inter-Club Championship sponsored by the People's Bank too is scheduled for December 5, 6, 12 and 13 at the same venue. |
