N and E Rehab Fund : Greater transparency needed - Tittawela

By Ananth Palakidnar

Economic Advisor to the President and Senior Director General of the Presidential Secretariat, Mano Tittawela called for greater transparency in the disbursement of funds for rehabilitation programs in the North and East.

Pointing out that there were already some criticisms about the manner in which funds and the allocations were handled, he said, more attention should be paid to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the North and East. "We expect transparency in utilizing the allocation made to re-build North and East and efforts would be taken to accelerate rehabilitation and reconstruction activities by ensuring allocations are not wasted," Tittawela said.

Commenting on the current political scenario with regard to the economic situation Tittawela told the Sunday Observer that President Kumaratunga would not interfere with the Prime Minister's economic programmes. However, he said she would encourage the Government to make more investments towards the infrastructure such as public transportation, health and education.
