Three D's take Kandy Sports Club to glory

by LAL GUNESEKERA

Devotion, dedication and determination were the three main ingredients that went into Kandy Sports Club's success on the local rugby season for the past few years where they have collected numerous trophies to exhibit on their shelves at the Nittawela club house.

This year, was no exception, as they won the Caltex League Championship, losing only to CH & FC (22-36) in the second-round at Maitland Crescent, whilst sweeping aside all other opposition - thrice by massive margins - beating Kurunegala RFC 172-0, Old Zahirians SC 141-0 and Kandy Youth SC 100-5 in the first-round engagements. They won the Clifford Cup beating CH & FC 30-22 in the final and also the 7's beating Army 27-5 in the final of the Cup category. However, they gave a 'miss' to the Premier Champions Trophy tournament.

For this performance they were picked as the "Best Club of the Tournament" by a panel headed by Dr. Maiya Gunasekera, who were appointed by the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU). Three of their players - Radhika Hettiaratchi, Sajith Mallikaratchi and Indrajith Bandaranayake, too were picked for some individual awards - Best Ruggerite of the Tournament, Best Captain and Best Three-Quarter respectively.

Kandy Sports Club's resurgence started in 1992 (it was formed in 1874), and had a big impact among the schools in the area. Their triumphs ignited new enthusiasm and is reflected in the compositions of the side. Kandy SC's untroubled journey to success can be simply put down to the capacity of rugby development and promotion with facilities including an ultra modernised gymnasium and pavilion.

A spokesman for the club said that they were grateful to every single person from the President (Dr. Sarath Kapuwatte) downwards who gave unstinted support to the club and players in every sphere and especially was grateful to one of its Trustees, Malik Samarawickreme (present Chairman of the UNP), who is a former President of the SLRFU and a great rugby promoter, for his invaluable assistance. He also thanked Kandy's supporters who never failed to travel with the team even to Colombo to witness and cheer their side.
