Spotlight on infrastructure at INTRAD 2003

by Chanuka Mannapperuma

The main focus of the UNF Government is to develop the country together with the peace process since it will usher in much required economic growth and prosperity for the country.

Therefore, this is the most opportune time to hold the "INTRAD 2003" Exhibition and Investor Forum, which showcases the potential of our country to the outside world.

These comments were made by Minister of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion, Professor G.L. Peiris when he opened the 'Regaining Sri Lanka - Invest in our Infrastructure' "INTRAD 2003" Exhibition and Investor Forum last week at the BMICH. The exhibition also paves the way for investors to get an understanding on the country's natural resources and basic infrastructure to start potential ventures in Sri Lanka.

President, National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (NCCSL), Asoka de Z. Gunasekera said Sri Lanka's present Government, after being elected at the end of 2001, decided to seek a solution to the 20-year old ethnic conflict and to repair a severely damaged economy.

"We are happy that since then, the economy has improved from a growth of -1.5 per cent to 5.5 per cent due to disciplined fiscal control coupled with economic reforms," he said.

The Regaining Sri Lanka programme is not merely about infrastructure changes, but is also about re-building lives and rehabilitation of the heavily devastated North and East.

He said the Government is working towards achieving a strong and modern economy, sustaining seven to eight per cent growth, through a higher quantum of investment efficiency and productivity, which is aimed to be achieved by a dynamic private sector operating within a very competitive environment by year 2010.

INTRAD 2003 is dedicated to 'Regaining Sri Lanka - Invest in our Infrastructure'. In keeping with the Government's theme, the NCCSL, in partnership with the BOI and BII, is organising this exhibition to showcase the projects available for investment to attract potential investors to fields such as infrastructure, IT and tourism.

Fifteen countries were associated with the event, which was held for the sixth time. It comprised around 80 stalls. The exhibition and investor forum will conclude November 30 (today).
