World Star for gift tea packs

by Elmo Leonard

Sri Lanka won an award at the World Packaging Organisation's (WPO) biennial World Star Awards contest, concluded in Cairo, Egypt recently. The awards were presented to recognise excellence among global packaging industries.

The winning entry was a gift pack of tea made of wood, portraying the traditional Kandy Esala pageant. It was submitted for the contest by Standard Trading Company, Colombo.

Only Sri Lanka, India, Japan and China won World Star Awards this year, from among the 14 nations represented by the Asian Packaging Federation (APF) covering the Asia Pacific region. Sri Lanka had submitted two entries for the World Stars, but the other entrant, Gospel House of Madampe, which came up with the innovation of using Manioc pith in place of established unperishable cushioning material, failed to secure an award.

Entries numbering 360 had been submitted for this year's contest, and 52 World Stars were awarded, Sri Lanka's sole representative at the event, Dharmatilake Ratnayake said.

Ratnayake (62), Vice President of WPO and President of APF was one of 24 delegates from 24 countries which represented the WPO. Ratnayake proposed a Global Student Star Contest for students reading for packaging degrees from universities and technical colleges.

The proposition was accepted and will begin with the APF conducting an Asia Star Awards contest for students from next year. Sri Lanka, Japan, China and Russia, among the APF membership, already conduct national packaging star awards to encourage students in their countries to improve skills in the discipline of packaging.

Ratnayake had appealed for WPO funds to teach packaging to underprivileged industrialists within the APF. However, an objection was raised that Sri Lanka did not merit assistance as its packaging industry was developed, according to information gathered by the USA's Central Intelligence Agency, Ratnayake said.
