Chandani and her Destiny in the limelight

Singing descant in the church choir and being an active member in the Methodist College Choir, during her school days, Chandani Silva was nursing a dream of being a regular performer on our stages.

Nurtured in a home where music was constantly heard, quite naturally, since her father was Sri Lanka's famous singer, film actor and comedian Freddie Silva, Chandani was stubbornly keen that her dreams should be a reality, despite the fact that he frowned on her enthusiasm to join the music profession. "I just knew that music was in my blood - you know that feeling that you get, when you are one hundred per cent sure that this is it, and I had to really follow my dreams" says the effusive Chandani when we met up for a pow wow in a recording studio!

A freelance singer who has her own two piece band Destiny, Chandani has just returned from Oman after a successful gig performing with Ice led by Lasantha Herath and included Sherry the other female vocalist. "Playing with Ice at the Le Pub Mecure, Al Falaj Hotel, our repertoire was contemporary pop, reggae, rock, hip-hop, dance music, hits of the 70s and 80s, country music, rock'n roll, Sri Lankan and Hindi songs and the guests enjoyed themselves asking for more.

The constant requests generally were for songs like Hotel California, Summer of 69 and My Heart Will Go On and also for traditional Sri Lankan music" says a happy Chandani. This was her first visit to the Gulf and she enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot too. Her other trips abroad where she performed were at the Taj Bengal Hotel in India and in Kolkata. Here the Sri Lankan baila was a top favourite which brought everyone, on to the dance floor.

Now in Sri Lanka with Destiny, her two piece outfit, Chandani sings every Sunday at the Arpico Showrooms in Nawinna and free lances with other bands. With three audio cassettes of Sinhala music behind her, and being the daughter of a famous father how does she live up to the expectations of people?

"People expect a lot from me, but people also appreciate me for being my father's daughter" pat comes the reply from Chandani.
