Schoolboys Binupa and Sanjay in close struggle

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Corr

Two schoolboys Binupa Wijesinghe and Sanjay Wettimuni will be engaged in a close struggle at the Lectra monthly medal for November organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and sponsored by Ledra Apparel Technologies which will get under way at the Victoria Golf links at Rajawella this morning (Sunday, November 30) at 7.30 a.m.

Around 75 golfers are expected to participate in this contest which has tremendous interest in the past.

This championship for the current year commenced in June and thirteen year Wycherly International Schoolboy display more prowess and skills and than the more experienced adults is currently leading the championships face with 740 points and he is challenged to the leadership by another schoolboy Sanjay Wettimuni with 540 points.

Binupa Wijesinghe build up 100 points in June, 100 in July, 250 in August, 100 in September and 190 in October. But Sanjay Wettimuni's progress has been meteoric and in just two monthly competitions he has accumulated 540 points. 190 points in August and a fine 350 in October which makes him the best bet for the Grand Prix title unless his handicap is brought down.

Sanjay Wettimuni did not participated in the monthly competition for June, July and September which brought him zero points. Had he participated in these monthly competition, he would have been better positioned.

Thus it will be interesting to see whether Binupa Wijesinghe could maintain his lead which is 200 points or Sanjay Wettimuni with another fine performance would oust him from the top slot.

With these two schoolboys showing excellent form, in third slot is former Sri Lanka Test cricketer and Test selector Sidath Wettimuni and like his son Sanjay, he too, did not play in three monthly competitions. In fourth place is Srinivas Rao with 121 points who has an outside chance of making a tilt at the trophy with seven more competitions to go.

The men's division race is led by expatriate Veinert Holm with 433 points. Holm started off in a crushing note scoring 350 points in the first competition held in June but thereafter he has been recording poor scores of 10, 3, 70 and did not participate in the competition.
