Agreement to develop SMI

Minister of Industries Rohitha Bogollagama will sign an agreement with Indian minister Dr. Takur, on December 29 to develop small and medium sector industries in Sri Lanka.

Other objectives of the agreement are to promote partnership projects and foter institution to institution and enterprise to enterprise co-operation between the two countries, exchange experts and marketing technologies. The agreement will also promote trade fairs and similar events between the two countries.

At a media conference the Minister said,that the Sri Lankan industrial sector had come of age in recent times with significant improvements in the export sector.

He said,that had enabled the industry to grow by 77%.This comprises 50% garment exports,23% of agricultureal and other industrial exports. However the apparel exports which had been at 67% last year, had dropped. The number of industrial related export items too had now increased to 1200.The dream of creating a new industrial culture was now vertualy a reality, he added.There are 125,000 small and medium sector industries in Sri Lanka.

To highlight this development to the public ,the ministry is organising an exhibition, "Nawa Dekma" at Viharamahadevi park, Colombo, from December 12 to 22 at a cost of Rs.40 million. The Minister said that no government funds would be utilised for this exhibition as the ministry was able to raise that amount through private sponsorship."

We have sold over 600 stalls and many BOI companies too would be participating and selling items at duty free rates. A visitor turn out of 1 million its expected for the exhibition.

The Minister said, that he was negotiating with an Israel investor to reopen the Kabool Lanka Factory in Thulhiriya.There were over 3200 employees and who had not been paid for a long time. Israel investor was also keen on opening a Denim Fabric manufacturing plant at the 22 acre complex."

However, the equipment used at the factory was not suitable for the new project and heare the reason for the delay".
