A talented pianist belonging to the new crop of young musicians is Dilip Seneviratne who performs at the Colombo Plaza in the evenings on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Nurtured on classical music and having done exams for the Trinity College of Music, Dilip leans heavily on blues, jazz and Latin. At present an enthusiastic member and keyboardist of the successful band Cross Section, his wide repertoire is a major plus for him. "I'm enjoying myself entertaining the guests. They sit and listen and I know they appreciate it too when they send down many requests. I play light, popular, blues and standards in my own way," says an unassuming Dilip. He's had his experiences in the music industry playing with groups like Cardinals Outburst, Steelers, Take 5, Latin Jazz, Kontraband and now with Cross Section, he's learnt the art of reading the mood of the audience. A member of the recognised Peterite Chorale, Dilip confesses he is an advertising man at heart, enjoys reading and his favourite cartoon character is the lovable Calvin. In his spare time, which is not much, he composes songs and was nominated for the Golden Clef '92 Song of the Year, for his song "You've Got What It Takes." For the future he is looking forward to a 4 piano concert. The last was held in 1998 at the BMICH when the programme included classics, latin, boogie and honky tank, and he's keeping his fingers crossed for staging one early next year. |
