It took a long time to get off the ground, a debut CD from the nightingale of both the Western and Sinhala music scene in Sri Lanka Corinne Almeida.
Singers who launched themselves into the music scene after me have released CDs and audio cassettes. But where I'm concerned after all these years there was nothing on record for my fans. I didn't know how to get about it perhaps they knew better than me. I sought financial assistance but it was not forthcoming, but now I can afford to throw a little money and get some satisfaction. Today producers offer peanuts and reap in big money. I decided to produce the CD myself and hope my fans will like it. I'm not looking for financial gain, but I'll be happy if I achieve it," comments Corinne in her characteristic candid style. Some newer names have moved into assist Corinne in the making of the tracks. The title track 'Aluth Deyek' the lyrics of which were written by Hemasiri Halpita while Rukantha wrote the music echoes Corinne's spirit of achievement. Other tracks include 'Vedikawe' her lifestyle on stage which was penned by Ayesha Sinhawansa with music arrangement by Sangeeth Wickremasinghe. Ayesha was also responsible for writing and composing 'Mawuni' which was arranged by Dileepa Mangala. Then Bathiya and Mahesh Denepitiya's 'Bandare' came off the pen of Vasantha Dukganarala, and the ballad 'Ma Obe' which was composed by Mahinda Bandara with lyrics written by Hector Wijesiri. Corinne thanks Brandon, Kevin, Shafi, Lal, Dileepa and Neil Warnakula for all their undivided help and dedicates the CD to her late Dad who is not around to enjoy her stardom, and to her loving and wonderful mother who was a source of comfort and inspiration through all times. "I'm sad that my Dad is not here to see me launch this CD. He was the one who started it all for me used to put me on a table, make me hold a 'mike' and sing. I also like to dedicate my songs to all those who have made use of my voice and not helped me in return" concludes this outstanding Sunday Observer Golden Clef Singer of the Year 2002 - award winner Corinne Almeida. |
