TULF bickering in courts

by S. Selvakumar

The inter-party conflict within the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) is likely to end in courts in due course. This follows a stormy Central Committee meeting held last Sunday at the party headquarters in Colombo where a faction favouring the party's General Secretary and Parliamentarian R. Sampanthan claimed that party President and Parliamentarian V. Anandasangaree has been ousted from the presidency, while Anandasangaree claims it was not so.

Anandasangaree told the Sunday Observer that the Central Committee meeting was not properly convened and he being the President of the party was not informed of the agenda of the meeting.

He said the central committee discussed certain false allegations brought against him and one such was a claim by certain members that he had advised the party to tell the LTTE to hand back the Elephant Pass camp back to the government security forces. "All these allegations are levelled against me at the behest of a third party and why should I be the scapegoat" he asked.

The third party that he mentioned, though he did not name, was the LTTE. He further said after levelling the charges the general secretary announced that the meeting was adjourned and everybody including Anandasangaree got up from their seats and this was interpreted as a vote of no confidence. "It is laughable matter" he added. Asked what he intended to do, he said only a court of law can decide whether the meeting was properly convened and whether he was ousted from the presidency as the Sampanthan faction claim.

Speaking from Trincomalee Sampanthan claimed that a two third of the Central Committee voted for the no confidence and therefore Anandasangaree is not the president any more. Asked who is the president now, he said that the party will decide on it, in due course and will act according to the party constitution and elect a new president.
