PA-JVP alliance to be sealed tomorrow

Five of the seven political parties affiliated to the People's Alliance voted in favour of a PA-JVP partnership at the PA executive meeting on Thursday. The two parties are expected to meet tomorrow to finalise the joint alliance. According to People's Alliance General Secretary D.M. Jayaratne, the parties in favour of an alliance are the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP), Mahajana Party, National Unity Alliance (NUA) and Desha Vimukthi Janatha Peramuna.

The Communist Party had asked ten day's time to express their views on the issue. But, Lanka Sama Samaja Party led by Batty Weerakoon said that they would address the issue after the President's response to their letter on the present political situation in the country.

A JVP politburo member said that Monday's meeting would determine whether they should continue with the talks or give up the idea of an alliance altogether. However, he said the JVP was keen on forming an alliance with the PA, as it was what the country needs. (DPL)
