South Africa beat All Blacks 26/19 to win Dubai Rugby Sevens

Ranjeeva Seneviratne reporting from Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Dec. 6: - A gallant South African outfit ended New Zealand's dominance of the Dubai Rugby Sevens by beating the All-Blacks by 26 points (three goals, one try) to 19 (two goals, one try) in the Cup Championship final played under floodlights at the Dubai Exiles Rugby Grounds on Friday.

The All-Blacks looked set to retain the title when the scores read 19-all but a last minute try by South Africa's Fabian Juries which was converted by Earl Rose helped the South Africans to win the Emirates Trophy and dash New Zealand's hopes of making it five-in-a-row.

The South Africans stormed into the final with a stunning 13-12 win over mighty England in the semi-final with Earl Rose executing the match winning drop goal while New Zealand cruised into the final with an easy 33-0 win over Samoa.

The South Africans had a narrow shave in the quarter-finals against Fiji whom they edged out by 19 points to 17 while the All Blacks were given a scare by France with the scores reading 10-all at full time. In their quarter-final match before New Zealand snatched victory with a try in extra time. Springboks' Fabian Juries was adjudged as the Best Player of the Tournament.

Argentina clinched the Plate Championship with a runaway 40-10 win over Australia in the final. Canada bagged the Bowl Championship by beating Kenya by 21 points to 10 in the final after leading 7-0 at the 'breather'. Debutantes Zambia took the Shield Championship with a convincing 59-26 win over Arabian Gulf in the final after leading 26-14 at half time.

Meanwhile the Sri Lankans who lost all five matches played in the tournament, will leave for South Africa tomorrow to participate in the South African Sevens and are expected to come up with a much better performance.
