Brother and sister combination take heavy toll of records by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN - Kandy Sports Corr. It was the day of the Jayatillake's as the teenaged brother Ransilu and sister Ranmani took a heavy toll of records at the Junior Weightlifting Championships - women and boys under 18 organised by the Sri Lanka Weightlifting Federation held at the University Gymnasium, Peradeniya. Eleven year-old grade 7 student from St. Anthony's Girls School, Kandy, Ranmani Jayatilleke competing in the under-18 age group in the 75 kg category set up three Junior Sri Lanka weightlifting records. Ranmani Jayatillake snatched 25.5 kgs and clean and jerked 37.5 kgs to make a total of 62.5 kgs. All three being Sri Lanka junior records. The previous marks being 25 kgs and 35 kgs and total 60 kgs. Samurdhi Kumari of Bandaragama Weightlifting Club improved on the previous clean and jerk of 32.5 kgs by hoisting 35 kgs in the under 20 years 75 kg category. The third women 'lifter' to set up a record was H. P. Herath of Anuradhapura in the under 20 age group and in the under 58 kg category when she clean and jerked 55 kgs to eclipse the previous record of 50 kgs. Ranmani's elder brother 17 year-old schoolboy from Kingswood College Ransilu Jayatillake was the teast among the lifters, competing in the under-18 age group in the 105 kg body weight category, he created two new junior records and one senior record. He first snatched 110 kgs and later clean and jerked 181 kgs eclipsing the previous Senior National record of 160.5 kgs by N. Athukorale of Torrington Weightlifting Club to total 270 kgs which is also a junior national record. This is the first time in the history of weight lifting in Sri Lanka that a 17 year-old had created a Senior National record and that too in a junior weightlifting championship. His total of 270 kgs is the highest by a junior lifter in Sri Lanka. Ransilu Jayatillake, a junior double international created history by setting up three records and winning a gold medal at the National Sports Festival. He has represent the country at Weightlifting as Power lifting. N. A. S. Perera of Polonnaruwa WLC was adjudged the Best Lifter and the Polonnaruwa District were adjudged champions with Richmond College as Runner up. |
