Olivia Gamage to represent Sri Lanka at IOC seminar in Lebanon by LESLIE FERNANDO Olivia Gamage, the Consultant in Sports and Physical Education at the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs will leave today (Sunday, December 7) to attend the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Sub-Regional Seminar for Women Sport to be held from December 9 to 14 in Beirut, Lebanon. Representatives from Lebanon, Baharain, Saudi Arabia, Tajkistan, Turkminstan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Bhutan, Syria, Qatar, Yemen, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Kuwait, Oman, Jordan, Kazakastan, Nepal, Maldives, Iran, Iraq will attend the seminar. Olivia, who held the high office of Director of Sports, Ministry of Education and Higher Education for several years was selected to attend this important seminar by the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka. She is also the National Course Director of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka. The IOC also has awarded her the Woman and Sport Achievement Diploma. The theme of the seminar - 2001-2003 Women in the Olympic Movement Progress Evaluation and is organised in co-operation with the Lebanese Olympic Committee. The sessions will include general information, seminar objectives and procedure, overview of situation of women's sport in Asia and in the Arab world, update on the IOC policy and initiatives for women in sport, evaluation of Olympic Solidarity assistance programmes by IOC, 2001-2003 evaluation of policies and actions, women in sport leadership issues and future strategies, group workshops, identification of key issues for women in sport and plan of action. On behalf of Sri Lanka Olivia Gamage who has showed her prowess in administration and organising several sporting events for schoolchildren and sportswomen throughout the island, will deliver presentations in Lebanon. Olivia has been an outstanding sportswoman and a top administrator. She has played the game of netball in a big way, a very good athlete, and a gymnast. She developed netball in schools throughout the country. In 1985, Olivia was the first Sri Lankan woman to receive a Master's Degree in Physical Education from the University of Leeds. She was awarded a British Council Scholarship to the United Kingdom. She participated at the VII Commonwealth and International Conference on Sports, Physical Education, Dance, Recreation and Health in Glasgow in 1986. In 1990 Olivia represented Sri Lanka at the conference on role of women in sports held in Thailand in 1980. Reputed netball coach and umpire, she has represented Sri Lanka as a netball umpire at the Asian and World Netball Championships in Hong Kong and Australia. She was also a coach of several leading firms, clubs and leagues. She was also the President of the Sri Lanka Schools Sports Council. She represented Sri Lanka at the World Summit in Physical Education held in Berlin, Germany in 1999. She also accompanied Sri Lanka teams abroad as manageress and also as coach. She was also the President of the Sri Lanka Gymnastic Association. |
