Travel exhibition to promote local tourism Sri Lanka's first travel exhibition, Serisara, organised by the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, was held at the BMICH from December 27 to 30. The main objective of the event was to promote the local tourism industry. Producer, Serisara travel programme, Gamini Pushpakumara said the response from locals was better than expected. There were 25 stalls displaying items which represented nature. "People are now seeking an eco-friendly environment," he said. Officer, Uva Provincial Council, Sarath Jayasinghe said: "This exhibition gave us many opportunities to tap the local tourist sector". He explained that a large number of people visited the stall and purchased maps and booklets. "Hotels and restaurants in Uva get a better income from locals compared to the income earned from foreigners. Through events of this nature, we can develop our tourism industry," he added. Bentota Aida Ayurveda Hotel sources said that they have a good demand from Europe. He said: "Through this exhibition, we hope to introduce our hotel to local tourists. During the summer vacation, tourist arrivals increase up to 70 per cent, and as we are an upmarket hotel, our charges are high". Adventure specialist of Wild Holidays, Shehan Pilapitiya said that 1500 locals visited the Ella hotel last weekend. He said that they have a good demand from locals. Through this exhibition, they hope to educate the potential local tourists on the adventure packages the company has to offer at places such as Ella and Piliyandala. Further, he said, this exhibition is a great opportunity to promote eco-tourism among locals. (CM) |
