World Bank pledges more support to development portal The Task Manager of the World Bank initiated Lanka Development Gateway Project, Ms. Kristin Lado, met with top officials of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce recently. The meeting held at the CCC was organised to brief the World Bank representative on the progress made by the Lanka Development Gateway (LkDG) portal which is implemented by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce with the technical consultative support of a team comprising Pricewaterhouse Coopers Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, Interblocks (Pvt)Ltd., and E-Development Labs Pvt. Ltd. A development oriented virtual initiative, LkDG, will be steered along certain themes of national interest and will be involved in and focus on generating and disseminating information to the rural and suburban areas of the country. Behind this thinking is the focus on developing small and medium sized enterprises, employment generation and information dissemination through the VGK, JobsNet and EIP projects, which are already under the banner of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. Currently, the LkDG portal which is nearing completion of the first year of its implementation phase, generates dynamic information on focused industries such as agriculture, gems and jewelry, ceramics and tourism, to name a few, and incorporates up-to-date information on a plethora of topics, positioning itself to achieve the project's objective of becoming a point of reference to target sectors both locally and internationally. The chamber discussed its own resources and experience which are geared towards steering projects which are focused on national development and projected its confidence in the LkDG project. The Chamber feels that the LkDG project would be a hallmark ICT venture with the technical support and expertise received from the team of professionals involved. Speaking of the diversity represented by the fifty plus country gateways in operation today, the Task Manager of the program acknowledged the uniqueness of the LkDG portal and commended the approach of promoting sustainable development through focus on strategic industrial sectors. She stated that the LkDG portal has the potential to address issues of national interest and the Gateway Foundation in turn would provide assistance wherever possible to assist the LkDG portal in achieving its objectives. |
