Junior golfers Mithun and Binupa fare adequately in India by LAL GUNESEKERA Two of Sri Lanka's leading juniors fared "quite well" at the All-India Junior Open Golf Championship worked off in Delhi last month and would have performed much better if not for the very cold and misty conditions experienced in the northern part of India. Mithun Nandasena Perera who won the Sri Lanka Junior Open just before leaving for Delhi, finished in 13th position in the overall championship, while Binupa Wijesinghe was 11th in his age group (under-15). Dubai based Andrews did not do well at all. The President of the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU), Shiran de Soysa, told the Sunday Observer that a lot more has to be done with the juniors with the coaching side to improve vastly. With this in mind, the SLGU are taking every step to improve the standards of the country's juniors and also expose them to more competitions. He also confirmed that Sri Lanka will be represented in Calcutta for the All-India Amateur Open Championship from February 9 to 15 and in the following week at the Pakistan Amateur Open Championship to be staged on a new course in Karachchi. Both competitions are on stroke play. Lalith Kumara who won the Bangladesh Amateur Open title last month (December) in Dhaka will lead the four-member side which will also include Sri Lanka's amateur champion K. Prabhakaran and Amarapathma, while the fourth player is to be picked soon by the selectors. The SLGU are also contemplating to stage an "one off" tournament very soon and invite the best in the pool, including top professionals Nandasena Perera and Anura Rohana too to tee off. The dates are to be decided soon. |
