Golfer Prabhakaran to be honoured by NEGC by P. RAJARATNAM in Nuwara Eliya A reception is organised by the Nuwara-Eliya Municipal Council (NEGC) in honour of the 112th National Amateur Golf Champion K. Prabakaran. The unanimous decision to have a reception was taken at the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council's year-ending meeting held under the chairmanship of Mayor Chandana Karunaratne. The 22-year-old Nuwara Eliya Golf Club employee convincingly beat Sri Lanka, India and Bangaladesh in the recently concluded National Championships held at Nuwara-Eliya. He won this event for the first time in the history of Nuwara Eliya and in Sri Lanka, and he has also participated in golf events, in India, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Pakistan and in other golf circuits in the Middle East. All thanks should go to the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club and its ever green Secretary and a former veteran planter Clive Tissera and its President N.U.G.D. Silva, the President of the N.E.G.C. who gave the exposure and assistance for the new national champion. After Prabakaran won the championship, he proceeded to Bangladesh and having participated in that country, he is scheduled to visit India next week to participate in the Indian Golf championship. The President of the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club - W.U.G.D. Silva, who himself was a planter in the Nuwara Eliya district, says that if the necessary encouragement and assistance were given to this young and upcoming golfers, whether they come from the lower ranks, there will be more champions like Prabakaran. Mayor Chandana Karunaratne and his Councillors are making elaborate arrangements for the forthcoming reception to Prabakaran. |
