Lankan porcelainware as good as any - Greeves by Hiran H. Senewiratne Sri Lanka's porcelainware industry can create a huge impact on the export market due to its quality and latest designs, said an internationally renowned tableware designer, Pamela Greeves. Greeves, currently working as a Consultant for Dankotuwa Porcelain Ltd (DPL), said raw materials that are available in Sri Lanka for porcelainware is ideal for the industry. The white porcelain body is said to be the striking feature of DPL products. "Cheap Chinese products will not hamper Sri Lankan porcelainware exports," Greeves said with confidence. Currently, the industry faces three challenges in the areas of design, cost and quality of the product. These have to be tackled to be comfortable specially in the export market, she emphasised. DPL holds a very good profile internationally specially in the UK, USA and European markets. At present, it is promoted in Japan and Middle-Eastern countries, she added. "DPL porcelainware can compete with products of any country due to their quality and the technology that is being used," she emphasised. She also said that the company's labour force is very skilful, artistic and relatively quick learners. Greeves has introduced two new designs that would be exhibited at the Frankfurt Trade Fair, which will take place from February 20 to 24. "I am now getting the products ready for the forthcoming event," said Greeves. She is confident that the country will receive many orders after this mega event. Greeves, who has a wealth of experience in the trade, having worked in many parts of the world, will promote DPL products globally. She is impressed with the company's latest technology as well as the organisation's culture. According to Greeves, her main focus is on designing and decorating more casual and modern tableware that are marketed under the ELAN brand name. DPL is a leading manufacturer of porcelain tableware in the country and is listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange. It holds the International Ceramics Inc, Japan status. According to DPL CEO, Kithsiri Wijesundera, the company had invested nearly one billion rupees on the factory. He said said that the company has a reputed customer base scattered around the world, which includes Ralph Lauren, Macy's Department Stores, Dansk, Crate, House of Fraser and Debenham. |
