Fast, furious and more...

December is often a month that brings to mind family, lots of gifts and of course an element of celebration unlike any other time of year. The 27th of December spawned a different kind of event - in the form of the final Rock Saturday for the year. The Fast & the Furious Rock gig attracted a giant Rock fanbase of over 700 people at the CR & FC Club House. The weather was remarkable, the atmosphere the best it has ever been and of course the bands defined themselves safeguarding an illustrious reputation.

Opening the night was solo artist Dylan Jayakody who's talent was received with great applause. His ability to sing while strumming his acoustic axe complimented the light weighted tracks he had chosen for evening. Henceforth the tone for the night was set at a daring pace.

Headon Kollision; the new metal kids on the block sliced a piece of the proverbial pie with their renditions of a Korn cover and their own songs. With a deal of work these lads could strive towards the great gates of Heavy Metal acclaim that many dream of and few have achieved. But talented they are, and everyone saluted their efforts.

Third in line was the dynamic three piece the Picasso Recess - who thundered the venue with their punk philosophy. The music was upbeat and infectious which had rock fans entertained for a long set of well composed originals and a handful of cover tunes.

Gospel Rock band Ezra performed after a short hiatus- displaying their wealth of talent with catchy songs, and a cover of the mighty Queen anthem 'We will rock you'.

The Grunge Princes themselves took to the stage to a massive audience, and from the first sounds of Grunge repented glory Paranoid Earthling crafted a storm with originals 'Pull me under', 'Bringing Down the sun', and 'Proceed'. The Earthlings contributed a well co-ordinated tight set of originals and some covers proving that they could drive the crowd wild anytime they chose to.

Stigmata performed to a magnified crowd, carefully selecting a list of popular originals 'Thicker than blood', 'Extinction' and 'Harvest of Sin' to name a few along with a cover each by Nevermore and Iced Earth. The band displayed their blend of aggression and complexity in their performance.

Independent Square depicted why they stand as the Alternative Giants in Sri Lanka with a well groomed set of originals, never losing sight of their accessibility and hard driven style. 'Anger', 'Poison on a tray' kept the crowd chanting for more.

It was a sight watching over 2/3rds of the crowd, both the guys and gals moshing, headbanging furiously to the rock sounds at the CR & FC. The venue is splendid and the atmosphere amazing. Was it a night that was Fast & Furious? Not really. It was a hell of a lot more.

Keep the last Saturday of January free for the next Rock Saturday at the CR & FC.
