RUACH : The breath of God

by Umangi de Mel

It may be ear splitting music that makes people jam from dusk to dawn but the origin of music, known as the 'food of love' isn't forgotten ever!

Music is the breath of God that's gifted to mankind and talent is praising the Lord for his generosity.

'Ruach' means the breath of God, the breath that we take, the reason why we survive .... it is a Hebrew word," says Fabian, who's come up with the name.

'Ruach' includes Fabian on bass and vocals, Danu on lead guitars and vocals, Mohan on guitars and vocals, Steffan on drums and vocals.

The guys have been playing in church for quite a while before they decided to form the band just six months ago.

"Our policy is to have clean lyrics and to make others aware of God's existence. We aren't a church band but to be frank, we've all had a personal encounter with God", they say.

They say that they don't believe in including immoral lyrics in their songs and that they hate prejudice, "we don't want people to judge us by the lyrics we sing out to them. We want to prove that we're the same characters both on stage and off stage," they continue, "It's God that made music, and we want to keep it that way, we believe it's divine."

Playing mainly gospel rock, 'Ruach' says that they do a few covers as well, "Jars of clay, Third day, Mercy me, Toby Mac, and we take the normal hymns and transform them into rock with our own lyrics." The guys say that they play at church for "Tap alive", every last Saturday of the month. "It's a session of heavy singing, loud music, and jazz, even 'Ezra' plays there."

Ruach has performed at 'Youth Alive' but the Methodist Auditorium last year along with 4 other bands, "we played with the Hi-Octane, Mute, Ezra and Reap. People enjoyed the session and we're glad they liked our originals," they say.

Talking about originals, Ruach seems to have written around 25 songs but of which they've already started performing five.

"The first is called "Out of the depths, 'Go down', 'Lost', 'My life', and 'Hold on' are the rest". 'Out of the depths' is a very heavy track which talks about how God reaches out to the man who's in need and 'Go down' is slow rock that pleads mercy from God for your sins, "they explain the line up of songs. Their third song that's called 'Lost', they say is a love song, "it's a song to God telling how indispensable his love is, to mankind.

The fourth song 'My life' is a thrash metal track that talks about a person's life; that it's prosperous in the hands of a beloved although it seems futile in the hands of the former and the last song 'Hold on' is a slow track that says not to give up, no matter what ...." The guys say that each song differs from the other.

"Our style is different and our lyrics carry a whole heap of values to the audience which is why we want the public to listen to our tunes, especially the young crowd. It was quite a surprise when we were invited to play at "Youth alive' last year just after we performed at 'Tap alive' for the first time as 'Ruach'.

The five say that they don't intend to take a break from the music scene, ever. "We've always played and we feel that it's been a very productive effort. We have an idea to play at Rock Company as well". Talking about the music arena in S.L, they thank the Rock Company for promoting the original talent in youth. "It's really good so long as the bands maintain their standards and not split at some point," the guys add.

Ruach says that they encourage each other to improve and coordinate when working on a song, "we put our ideas together and push ourselves to do better."

To them, music could be a real influence on people, "music lifts you up and especially music that has good lyrics could touch the lives of people."
