Diplomats to discuss rehab and reconstruction in Kilinochchi tomorrow by Ananth Palakidnar Representatives of foreign missions in Colombo are scheduled to attend a meeting organised by the LTTE in Kilinochchi tomorrow to discuss future plans on rehabilitation and reconstruction activities in the war-torn North and the East. According to LTTE's media spokesman Daya Master, the meeting will be presided by one of the LTTE representatives at the peace talks and the chief of economic programmes, Dr. Jay Maheswaran. The LTTE's meeting at its Policy-making office in Kilinochchi tomorrow has also been considered a forerunner to the second follow-up meeting of the `Tokyo Donor's Conference on Reconstruction and Development of Sri Lanka' which will be chaired by Yasushi Akashi, representative of the Japanese Government on January 23. At tomorrow's meeting, the LTTE is expected to request the international community to take measures to expedite the reconstruction and rehabilitation process in the war-torn areas in the North and the East. "Matters outlined in the LTTE's proposals for an Interim Administration in the North and the East with regard to the reconstruction activities in the region will be discussed in detail" Daya Master said. More than fifty representatives including those from Norway, Japan, UK, USA, Germany and Canada are expected to attend the meeting the LTTE spokesman said. Meanwhile, the LTTE's political wing leader S.P. Thamilselvan will fly to Norway later this month to meet Norway Deputy Foreign Minister and facilitator of the Sri Lankan peace process, Vidar Helgessen. This will be the first meeting between the LTTE and the Norwegian Facilitators since Norway temporarily stepped out of the peace process following the constitutional crisis in Colombo last year. LTTE theoretician Dr. Anton Balasingham is also likely to join Thamilselvan at this meeting. After his tour in Oslo Thamilselvan with his delegation will visit European countries to explain LTTE's stance on the current political situation in Sri Lanka, Daya Master said. In the meantime the visiting Japanese special envoy Yasushi Akashi is scheduled to meet the LTTE leaders in Kilinochchi this week. |
