Swedish MPs concerned over children affected by war A four-member Swedish parliamentary delegation expressed its concern and worries over the children affected by war, during a meeting with the LTTE's political wing leader Thamilselvan in Kilinochchi last week. The four Swedish parliamentarians Lena Adelsohn - Liljeroth, Hillevi Enystrom, Christina Husmark Pehrsson and Inder Rene toured Jaffna and Kilinochchi on a UNICEF hosted study tour, learning about the peace process, state of the children in the war-torn areas and also observing the programmes supported by the Swedish government in the North. Ms. Inger Rene (MP and head of the group) along with the other MPs, wanted Mr. Tamilselvan to prove that the LTTE takes action in order to release all children and urged the LTTE to release more children to the newly established Transit Centre in Kilinochchi. "We cannot accept any child not being released from the LTTE", said Ms Cristina Husmark (MP). According to UNICEF, during the year of 2003, there had been 700 reported cases of child recruitment by the LTTE, "This is not acceptable and undermines our confidence with respect to the LTTE's good faith in implementing the Action Plan", said Ms Lena Liljeroth (MP). Swedish MPs are encouraged by the statement of Tamilselvan "to solve this problem by the end of 2004" and take this statement as a promise that no more child recruitment will take place and that all child soldiers will be released by the end of this year. |
