Battle of Titans - CIS vs Lyceum International on Jan. 24

by A. C. DE SILVA

The 'Big Match' inter-school cricket season starts rather early this year with two International Schools - Lyceum International School and Colombo International School matching their wits in a 50-over encounter on January 24 at the Khettarama International Cricket Stadium. This encounter is an under 19 clash.

Titled 'Battle of the Titans', this is the inaugural match in the series and it is intended to make it an annual clash with a trophy - Lyceum Challenge Trophy' being awarded from the inauguration of the clash.

Both schools are still in their infancies, with Colombo International School slightly ahead, having started their cricket in 1989 and Lyceum International School starting cricket in 1996 after inaugurating the school in 1993.

Amrit Wijesuriya captains Colombo International School and Sriyan Miftas leads Lyceum International School. Colombo International School after starting cricket in under 13, under 15 and under 17 levels, graduated into senior cricket in 1991 and the enthusiasm of the boys at school has encouraged the authorities to organise an International Schools Cricket Tournament in October this year.

In 2002 Colombo International became under 19 champions and last year, they were runners-up. Though CIS did not have any cricket fixtures in 2003/2004 with any government school, the CIS authorities are keen to popularise the game and started cricket at the under 12 age level and after this 'Big Match', CIS will play an under 12 match against Lyceum International on January 26 at MCA grounds starting at 1.30 p.m. Lyceum International School, Nugegoda started off with under 13 and under 15 cricket in 1996 with a few boys numbering around 15 to 20 under the now famous coach Nelson Mendis and graduated into under 17 and under 19.

Lyceum International has had a fair share of success in cricket. In 1999, they were under 17 champions and repeated their success in 2000. They were runners-up in 2001 in the same age group and were again runners-up last year. Lyceum were champs in 2001 in under 15 age group and champs in 2002 in under 13 age group.

The Lyceum under 19 team toured Malaysia in August 2001, while their under 17 team went on tour to India in December 2000 while their under 15 team also toured India in 2002.
