Big money in Mahinda Wijesekera football tourney

Matara Youth Sports Club held Matara Sports Club to a one-all draw in the opening match of the Mahinda Wijesekera Challenge Shield Tournament at the Uyanwatte Esplanade. The tourney will end on January 26.

There are 18 teams in the competition and they have been put into two divisions. In the 'A' division are: Matara Sports Club, Uyanwatte, Matara Youth Medawatte, Grahaloka S.C. Walpola, Black Horse Fort, Matara.

The teams in the 'B' division that will play on a knock-out basis: Monsters S.C., Veterans S.C., Devinuwara S.C., Nilwala S.C., Old Thomians S.C., Sussex S.C., Rahula S.C., Tilena Tharu S.C., Peragon S.C., Rantharu S.C., Anura S.C., Janatha S.C.

The winners of each division will be awarded a trophy and Rs. 10,000 each, while the runners-up will get a trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 each. There's more money - each team playing in the tournament will get Rs. 50,000 each to purchase equipment.
