Indian cabinet meets to discuss security issues NEW DELHI, Jan 17 (AFP) India's cabinet met Saturday evening to discuss security issues and a proposal to buy 44.Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani and Defence Minister George Fernandes attended the meeting. The acquisition of the aircraft carrier is expected to figure in talks with Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov who arrives Monday for a three-day visit. India has been looking for a new aircraft carrier for more than a decade. Russia offered the Admiral Gorshkov free three years ago, on condition that New Delhi spent millions of dollars to refit the ageing vessel. |
