Egypt slams Israeli threat to kill Hamas leader CAIRO, Jan 17 (Reuters) - Egypt on Saturday described Israeli threats to kill Hamas leader Ahmed Yassin as illogical, illegal and inconsistent with a desire for peace. "Much of what Israel does is not in line with any logic, nor any law nor any real desire to reach a settlement," Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher told reporters who asked about an Israeli official's remark that Israel will "liquidate" Yassin. Israeli Deputy Defence Minister Zeev Boim said on Friday that Yassin had better dig himself a tunnel in the ground because the Israelis would be after him. "We will find him in his tunnels and liquidate him," the deputy minister told Army Radio. Maher said that despite such statements Egypt saw signs that Israeli public opinion was unhappy with Israeli government policy and wanted to live in peace with Palestinians. Earlier on Saturday, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Maher had talks with visiting Irish Foreign Minister Brian Cowen, who is touring the Middle East at the start of Ireland's presidency of the European Union. Earlier this month, Cowen said that inaction in the Middle East was "simply not an option" during Ireland's six-month presidency, which started on January 1. |
