'A Passion to Succeed' - working on leadership skills The Disability Organisations Joint Front (DOJF) recently launched an innovative "Capacity Building Training and Development Programme" for its member organisations. As part of this, a 3-day workshop was organised by the DOJF in collaboration with Eagle Insurance. The workshop "A Passion to Succeed" focused on the development of leadership skills and capacities and was attended by 23 participants from 15 disability organisations from different parts of the island. The Human Resource Department of Eagle Insurance used their expertise and resource persons to provide a stimulating and productive programme. This was the second in a series of 4 workshops in the DOJF Capacity Building Programme. The first was on Policy Development, while workshops on Resource Management and Project Management are to follow. The Disability Organisation Joint Front (DOJF) is an umbrella body representing organisations "of" and "for" people with disabilities throughout Sri Lanka. The DOJF aims to enable its members to work jointly as a pressure group to protect the rights of persons with disabilities ensuring them a free and independent life. As a cohesive movement there will be increased opportunities to influence policy and to address the issues that have marginalised disabled people and excluded them from mainstream society. People with disabilities throughout Sri Lanka continue to face barriers which prevent them from participating as equal members of society. Disabled children, for example, are often denied access to education, and adults denied access to training and employment opportunities. This in turn makes it very difficult for people with disabilities to lead full and active lives.By strengthening the capacities of the DOJF and its member organisations, programmes and projects will have greater impact, effectiveness, relevance and sustainability. This will result in an improved quality of living for people with disabilities all over Sri Lanka. |
