DSI group enters roofing industry with Japanese collaboration

The DSI Group, one of Sri Lanka's most diversified conglomerates introduced a new and revolutionary concept in roofing to the local architectural fraternity and the construction industry when they launched 'Nivasa' Roofing Solutions.

'Nivasa' Roofing Solutions, has been launched with Japanese technology and machinery from Takasago Industry Co. Ltd., of Japan at a cost of Rs. 450 million. The state of the art factory is located in Anuradhapura and numbers over 100 employees with a capacity of turning around 4 million tiles per annum. In Sri Lanka for the launch was Mr. Hitoshi Ando, Director, Takasago Industry Co. Ltd., of Japan.

Speaking at the launch, Chairman DSI Group Samson Rajapaksa, said that the birth of 'Nivasa' was a combination of observation, coincidence and initiative, "It all began when the DSI Group discovered that silt/clay accumulated over the years in tanks was ideal for the heavy clay industry". Rajapaksa went on to say that after an exhaustive search and having gone into the credentials of several international companies, they settled on reputed Japanese technical collaborators Takasago Industry Co. Ltd., of Japan, the leading manufacturer of raw clay machinery in the world.

Explaining the manufacturing process, Dr. Bandula Perera, Managing Director Samson, Rajarata Tiles said that the patented state of the art Japanese technology processed the clay until it was ready to be shaped under 30 tonnes of pressure. Subsequent to glazing, the tiles are fired at 1000 degrees centigrade for 24 hours. "The end result, we guarantee, will give a new dimension to roofing and the construction industry". Unlike traditional tiles, Nivasa tiles interlock fast and can be fixed to the roof with screw nails, giving designers the leeway to build roofs of varying shapes and angles, hitherto not possible.

Nivasa tiles also guarantees the tile remaining firm with no leaks occurring no matter how heavy the rain. Nivasa tiles will be available in a range of colours, thus complementing the architects creativity.

The tiles are manufactured in such a way that prevents discolouration, fungi and cracking. As they are manufactured from natural clay, these tiles are a healthy roofing alternative and are ideal for the tropics as they keep the interior of the house cool. furthermore it is a comprehensive roofing solution because all attachments are available, as all tiles come with an unconditional 10 year guarantee.

"It is probably due to the fact that so far, the manufacture of roofing tiles has remained a cottage industry for over a century in Sri Lanka that changes in the manufacturing processes and designs never took place, but now modern technology has changed all that, said Dr. Perera.
