KFC assures safety of its chicken against 'bird flu'

Cargills (Ceylon) Limited - the local franchise of the globally renowned fast food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) - assured its customers that its products are 100% safe against the recent 'bird flu' outbreak. This assurance was given to customers after the statement made by the All Island Poultry Association (ALPA) at a media conference held on of February 11, that it is safe to consume poultry products in Sri Lanka.

According to detailed studies done on bird flu, it is found that the virus is destroyed at a temperature above 60 celsius. All KFC poultry products are cooked via a fully computerised process, which maintains a constant temperature of 170 degrees celsius for a minimum of 14 minutes. This process ensures that the chicken is completely safe.

In addition, KFC meals are always stringently supervised under the strictest guidelines of KFC's three 'Gold Standards' of quality: top quality ingredients from global standard producers which are certified ISO 9000; ingredients used at KFC pass frequent & periodic physical, chemical and microscopic inspections.Speaking on the issue, the Executive Director of Cargills (Ceylon) Limited, Sidath Kodikara, said: "We want to reassure our customers that KFC ingredients are perfectly safe for consumption.

Our suppliers are routinely inspected to ensure that they meet or exceed strict government food and safety regulations and that the birds are free of the avian flu." "In addition, the World Health Organisation, considers cooked chicken and cooked egg products to be safe, and that infection may only occur with live poultry or at a farm," he added.

KFC entered the Sri Lankan market in 1996 bringing the famous taste of chicken prepared with the legendary Colonel Sanders' secret blend of herbs and spices. Today, tens of thousands of Sri Lankans join over 6.5 million people around the world who make KFC a part of their day to day lives.

Today, KFC's hygienically-prepared food is available to the chicken-loving public from their well-known outlets at Majestic City (Bambalapitiya) and Access Towers (Union Place); in Ja-Ela and Kandy; the most recent outlet in Kotahena; and at outlets to be opened in the near future in Moratuwa and Mt. Lavinia.

As the ever increasing demand for quick service meals reaches an extreme high in today's fast paced lifestyle, KFC now offers Sri Lankans the opportunity to enjoy quality chicken meals that are so well accepted that KFC can proudly say "We Do Chicken Right".
