EC cautions campaigners on Do's, Dont's

by Don Asoka Wijewardena

Commissioner of Elections, (EC) Dayananda Dissanayaka, has called upon all political parties and independent groups to strictly observer the rule of law and renounce the use of violence, physical force and intimidation in any form during the period leading to the election, on election day and after the results are out.

The Commissioner offering a list of do's and don'ts to political parties has pointed out they are required to firmly maintain discipline among their members and supporters to prevent violence, intimidation and any breach of the election law. He has stressed upon the need to take prompt disciplinary action against members who commit such violations and where necessary withdraw such political campaign.

According to the list, all candidates are required to respect the rights of all contesting political parties and groups and refrain from any action that may hinder them from campaigning freely in accordance with the Election Law. All political parties have been asked to respect the rights of the polling agents of rival parties and refrain from any action that obstructs them from performing their legitimate duties.

The Election Commissioner has also urged all parties to ensure that all forms of election propaganda such as display of posters and banners, organising processions and meetings to canvas votes, do not violate the rights of citizens either by encroaching on private property or behaving in a manner which would be disruptive to their normal life.

The Commissioner has also asked heads of government departments and ministries to release government servants for election-related work.

The Department of Elections has estimated that it would require the services of a 150,000-member strong staff to handle the workload.
