10,600 polling stations for election 2004

There will be 10,600 polling stations this year indicating an increase
of 610 polling stations over the previous election. The Elections
Department will deploy over 110,000 officials to man the election. The
Department has also ruled out using temples where monks are candidates as
polling centres.The number of political parties contesting each district
is as follows:
The increase in the number of voters has resulted in a slight change in
the number of seats for Colombo, Gampaha, Kurunegala and Puttalam
districts, while the number of MPs elected to Colombo and Gampaha will be
reduced by one each, Kurunegala and Puttalam will have one extra member
each at the next Parliament.
Following is the breakdown of the number of MPs to be elected:
