Ranil's govt. a broker's camp - Bahu by P. Krishnaswamy Three left parties, the New Left Front (NLF) led by Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne, New Democratic Front (NDF) led by Vasudeva Nanayakkara and the Alternate LSSP Group led by Lal Wijenayake, have come together on an election front to present candidates in all constituencies islandwide in the general election. The front will contest on the NLF's 'table' symbol. Wickramabahu Karunaratne told the Sunday Observer that the Alternate CP group led by Rajah Uswetikeiyawa which had already pledged support to them was now in the process of considering possibilities of forging an alliance with the front and its decision would be intimated shortly, before filing nominations. Their election platform would mainly be based on "peace, freedom and democracy as well as less intervention of global powers in Sri Lanka, including India", Karunaratne said. As regards finding a political solution to the national ethnic problem, he said their stand was that the stalemated peace process should be resumed on the basis of the Tamil national document, viz: the Interim Self-Governing Authority (ISGA) proposal of the LTTE, and that the document should be considered as the starting point for future negotiatory talks. He said that PM Ranil Wickremesinghe's government was "a broker's camp working for the multi-national system while President Chandrika Kumaratunge's alliance is guided by perspectives of religious and racial conflicts in the country". |
