More Aussie aid to rid Lanka of land mines The Australian government has allocated an additional one million Australian dollars (Rs. 75 million) towards the UNDP Mine Action Program to rid Sri Lanka of land mines and expedite the resettlement process. The latest allocation for the mine action program in Sri Lanka was announced in the Australian Parliament by Australian Foreign Secretary Chris Gallus last week. Australia was one of the first donors to support mine action in Sri Lanka and this latest contribution brings funding over the last five years to A$3.7 million (Rs. 278 million). Funding has previously been provided to UNICEF for mine awareness programs, and to the UNDP Mine Action Program. As with all Australian development assistance to Sri Lanka, funding is in the form of grants rather than loans. Australia's total assistance to Sri Lanka is expected to exceed A$16.2 million (Rs. 1.21 billion) this financial year, with most of it being spent on humanitarian, peace building and rehabilitation activities across Sri Lanka. |
