Sports law has politicized rugby football - SLRFU President

by LAL GUNASEKERA

Rugby is not dead, although there are problems. The Sports Law has only politicized the sport. This was one candid remark made by Mohan Balasuriya, who was re-elected President of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) at its annual general meeting yesterday at Trans Asia Hotel. He was uncontested.

He said that the local scene had not changed over the years, but there was a tremendous boost among the schools, and more clubs have to be formed to absorb these young school leavers. He also said that Provincial Unions should be stronger and target of the SLRFU is the 2006 Asiad - "We have to start now."

Former Sri Lanka captain Priyantha Ekanayake was re-elected Deputy President with 24 votes to Chinthaka Perera's eight. There was a contest for the Secretary's slot too, which went to Iswan Omar with 22 votes to S. Sahabandu's 10. Shantha Kurumbalapitiya was re-elected uncontested to the post of Treasurer.

The seven elected to the Council were Major General Krishnaratne (32), Arjun Dharmadasa (32), Sqdr Ldr. Sanjay Fernando (32), Michael Jayasekera (30), Fazal Mohamed (24). Group Captain Nalin de Silva (24) and Ravi Balasuriya (22).

Five were also made Life Members of the SLRFU. They were Summa Navaratnam, Y. C. Chang, Gamini Fernando, Malik Samarawickreme and Hemaka Amarasuriya.
