Royal-Thomian - Seventy fifth match - 1953 Ian Pieris' century and Piachaud's bowling help Thomians to innings win The 75th Royal-Thomian cricket match played on March 13 and 14 at the Colombo Oval, was one of S. Thomas' best matches to-date, as the Thomians outplayed their arch rivals in every department of the game to win by an innings and 34 runs. To Thomian skipper Ian Pieris went the honour of being the top all-rounder in the game. He made a fine century - 123 and then went on to capture four Royal wickets for 15 runs in the second innings, having taken two in the first innings. S. Thomas' batted first, made 290 in their first innings, but it was a different story at the start as the Thomians ran into early trouble and four wickets crashed for just 15 runs in the first innings at which stage skipper Ian Pieris joined G. L. W. Wijesinghe. This was revival time for the Thomians, as Pieris began to belt the Royal bowling to all parts of the field, while Wijesinghe stood his ground well at the other end. Pieris seemed to be the master of the situation and he hit a six and 16 fours to collect 70 runs in boundaries in an innings studded with some glorious strokes all round the wicket. Pieris' 123 runs took him 140 minutes, while the 100 came in 120 minutes. He scored at the rate of 52 runs per hour. G. L. W. Wijesinghe took 140 minutes to score 64 runs. With Pieris and Wijesinghe going great guns (they added 186 runs for the fifth wicket - a record for the series), the Thomians were able to get away from the early mess they were in and eventually total 290 in their first innings. After Pieris and Wijesinghe took the Thomians away from the danger period, M. Samarasinghe (32) and D. D. N. Selvadurai (17) put on a valuable 55 runs for the seventh wicket. With the Thomians getting away from the danger period, the Royalists too made a somewhat good reply at close of play on the first day, and made 77 for one wicket - that's 367 for the loss of 11 wickets. But is was disaster for the Royalists on the second day as they were out for 153 runs and following on, were out for 103 runs. Ubhaya de Silva bowled best for the Royalists in the Thomian innings and took 4 for 67, while Fitzroy Crozier had 3 for 46. But Thomian Dan Piachaud outshone both of them. Piachaud, the off-spinner, getting a little help from the pitch, took 7 for 50, while Ian Pieris took 4 for 29 in the second innings and M. E. Aldons, the left-arm swing bowler, took 3 for 16. S.
