TT coaching scheme for boys and girls The Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka is conducting a coaching clinic for boys and girls in seven provinces. The provinces involved are: Western, North Western, North Central, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and Southern Province. A total of fifty - 25 boys and 25 girls from each province have been selected to follow the coaching classes which will go on for six months starting on March 5 at St. John's College, Nugegoda. David Pieris Motor Company is sponsoring the coaching programme. The boys and girls who have been selected for the coaching scheme have been informed by Daya Samaraweera (SP Trincomalee Police) - the President of Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka. The coaches who will be in charge are: Messrs P. D. Ratnasiri (National Coach), Mahinda Ellepola, Gamini Silva, Anura Lal, Chandana Perera and Sunil Abeygunasekera. Daya Samaraweera - the President of TTASC said that a coaching scheme of this nature is being held after ten years. S. Thomas' 'A' beat Royal 'A' by 46 runs on 1st innings Two good performances from skipper Shane Godwin who hit an elegant 88 with 12 fours and medium paceman Nigel Adams a fine spell of bowling to capture 5 for 53 enabled S. Thomas' College 'A' to obtain a 46 runs first inning win over Royal 'A' in their cricket match concluded at Reid Avenue yesterday. S. Thomas' made 177 in their first innings on Friday and Royal were lowly placed 91 for 7 resuming yesterday, the Royalists were dismissed for 131. S. Thomas' declared their second innings at 167 for 6 with Danuksha Colombage stroking an unbeaten 55 (6 fours). Royal set a victory target 213 off 30 overs, were 129 for 3 with opener Kasun Ranabahu hitting an aggressive 65 not out with 4 sixes and 7 fours. S. Thomas; 177 (S. Godwin 88, F. Ahamed 4 for 31, D. Army win women's rugby sevens Army beat Slimline by 12 points (1 goal, 1 try) to nil to retain the Cup title at the Inter-Club Womens seven-a-side rugby championship of the SLRFU at the Royal College Sports Complex yesterday. Earlier, Army beat Havelocks 27-0 in the quarter-finals and Hong Kong 10-7 in the "semis", while Slimline beat Air Force in the "quarters" and Western Province RFU 30-0 in the semi-finals. KV won the Plate category beating Wayamba RFU 35-0 in the final, while Havelocks beat Air Force 38-0 to win the Bowl category and Ratnapura beat Central Province RFU 10-7 to win the Shield category. Before joining the Upali Group of Newspapers, 'R.L', as he was well-known, was also attached to the Daily News Sports Desk. An old Josephian, 'RL', was a member of the Bloomfield, and was also a cricket umpire. He was also employed at Air Ceylon, Quantas and British Airways too. His remains lie at A. F. Cambrians claim to be best team this season Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa completed their cricket fixtures this season for the Elephant Lemonade Trophy. They will be playing their 'Big Match' with St. Sebastians on 12th and 13th March. Out of the fifteen matches played they have four outright wins ten first innings wins while they lost on first innings to D. S. Senanayake Vidyalaya. In their 108 years of cricket, Prince of Wales this is the first instance that they beat S. Thomas' and Royal outright in the same year and also they passed the three hundred run-mark in seven matches. The team was captained by all-rounder Kavinda Silva and former Cambrian cricketer Jayantha Perera was their coach. The Principal of Prince of Wales College, S. J. P. Wijesinghe told the Sunday Observer that he is delighted with the performances of the cricket team and thanked the Old Boys Association and the newly formed Cambrian Cricket Association for their unstinted and guidance to achieve good results. Further he added that Cambrians could now claim to be the best team in the island this season. |
