$ 18 mln boost for Kalutara

An agreement for US $ 18 mln undertaken by Myungshin Lanka (Pvt) Ltd., and BOI. Myungshin Lanka a company with a South Korean collaboration. has undertaken to design, build and handover eight construction projects which includes a Public Market Complex, reconstruction of Kalido Rest House, Courts Complex, Police Complex, 2nd Stage of Kalutara main bus stand, Medical facility centre, shopping cum Recreational Centre and Youth Village.

Chairman and Managing Director of Myungshin Lanka Mr. W. D. Jagath Wickrama, and Mr. Kim Man Soo as the representative for the Korean collaborator signed for the investment company.

Wickrama explained that the finances for all projects undertaken by the company will be brought into the country from Korea and that there won't be any local borrowings.

This would certainly help the country at large while it would also provide opportunity for Korean investments.

"There are many infrastructure development projects that Sri Lanka very badly needs. Unfortunately, the country does not have the required financial strength to implement these on its own.

That's where we come in. We have identified these needs and are willing to assist Sri Lanka to put up the urgently required facilities.

We have introduced a strong investment resource to Sri Lanka and this is just the beginning of a series of development projects that will be undertaken by us," he further said.

Lakdasa Colombage, Director Marketing of Myungshin Lanka said that this project which is aimed at providing the much needed facilities to the District of Kalutara will help the city towards becoming self sufficient in terms of basic facilities and requirements. "As for the construction work of the projects, we will make use of locally available resources as much as possible. There are very competent construction companies, which can handle any size of construction in Sri Lanka.

We are a Sri Lankan company and mindful of the benefits that would be passed to our country when involving our strategic partners from Korea in the projects undertaken by us. We want to make maximum use of every dollar that will be brought in for this project," he said.

He said that construction work of the Public Market Complex and the Kalido Rest House will commences within the next three months and will be completed within nine to fifteen months. The proposed Public Market Complex will comprise three floors including the ground floor and a Basement Car-Park, on a land in extent of approximately 100 perches, bordering the Goodshed Road. 155 shop spaces in two floors and office space in the third floor will cater to the long due facilities to both, shoppers and vendors of Kalutara District.

All requirements of a general shopping complex will be added to make it meaningful and convenient to the shoppers. The basement car park will have room for 35 vehicles.

The Kalido Rest House will have 32 rooms including 2 suites, a swimming pool, a function room and restaurant.

The location of Kalido is one of the best in the District of Kalutara. With a wide and long beach strip between the sea and Kalu Ganga, the site will be converted to be an excellent tourist attraction in the country.

With a wide selection of good food, accommodation facilities and access to the beach it will be an attractive recreational location too.

He further added that the Kalutara Town Development Plan will see a complete Courts Complex with provision for Appeal Court, High Court, District Court, Magistrate Court, Primary Court and Labour Tribunal, Judges' chambers, office rooms for Registrar, state officers, state counsellors, Jury Rooms, Production rooms and office for police post.

A Library for Lawyers, separate rest rooms for judges and Lawyers, separate canteens for Lawyers and the public, Lobby areas and public toilets will be housed in the proposed complex. One out side of the Complex there will be space for a post office, restaurant and a communication service center. In other words, a complete complex for the purpose.
