Ravi Peiris of Andrew the Travel Company:

From Audit trainee to General Manager

Hardwork, dedication and job satisfaction led to the success of Ravi Peiris, the General Manager of Andrew the Travel Company, who started his career as an Audit trainee before switching on to the hospitality trade.

Family

Ravi Peiris was the eldest son of a family of three children, including one boy and two girls. His father worked at the Ceylon Government Railway while his mother was a housewife. He and his sisters were brought up by the grandmother at their home in Rajagiriya since the parents had to travel extensively throughout the country due to his father's job.

School

Peiris had his entire education at Wesley College. He was a keen hockey player and a member of almost all the clubs in school." I got the best results at the GCE (O/L) Examination in the Sinhala stream," he said. For his Advanced Level Exam he did Bio Science. He was also a prefect in school.

"Since I failed to gain university admission, I followed the ICMA, now known as CIMA. I was able to complete only two parts since my father fell sick".

Peiris holds a Diploma in Business Management and is a member of the Institute of Management, Sri Lanka.

Career

He started his career under Nihal Sri Amarasekera as an Audit trainee and worked there for one year before joining Richard Peiris & Co. Ltd., where he was attached to its Arpico factory at Nawinna as a Costing and Administrative Assistant. In addition, he was also the Secretary of the Arpico Sports Club. During that time, the company represented almost in all sports.

Andrews Travels

"I worked there for five years before moving on to Andrews Travels in 1980 through a personal contact. When I joined, the office was situated at Horton Place and the staff comprised six or seven people with three to four vehicles".

"Over the years we were able to build the company to what it is today due to hard work and dedication of the staff.

"At present we have a staff of around 30 in the office and a fleet of 20 vehicles which include buses, cars and vans. The company has diversified into other areas such as pharmaceuticals and auto service".Recently the name of the company was changed to Andrew the Travel Company from Andrews Travels.

Advice

"Whatever job you do, take it seriously rather than doing it for the sake of doing it. Understand and learn about it and then you can enjoy it. Don't ever think that it is not your job, be flexible and willing to learn.
