LTTE split threatens TNA sweep in N-E? by Deepal Warnakulasuriya The worsening split between the LTTE high command and its Eastern regional command may cause problems for the UNP which was hoping to ride to power with the help of the Tamil National Alliance's expected electoral landslide in the North-East, some political analysts say. A possible split in the LTTE may cause the TNA to lose its expected majority of seats in that region, political analysts say. They warn that this turn of events in the North-East would be disastrous to the UNP which may be looking to form the next government with the help of the TNA which has the backing of the LTTE. Sources close to the other Tamil political parties confirmed that the TNA was hopeful of receiving the bulk of the Tamil votes with the backing of the LTTE. These sources feel that the LTTE's spilt would directly affect the TNA's election campaign in the Northern Province. Some political analysts also predict that the UNP, which hopes to form a government with the assistance of the TNA, has lost its chance since the TNA may not win as many seats as originally expected in the North-East. |
