Teams evenly balanced in Moratuwa's 'Battle of the Golds' by DILWIN MENDIS Moratuwa Sports Corr. The 54th Cambrian - Sebastianite Big Match populanly known as 'Battle of the Golds' will be played on 12th and 13th March 2004 at the De Soysa Stadium Moratuwa. This match was inaugurated in 1933 and played upto 1937. There was a stoppage and it recommenced in 1954. Former Principal of of Wales Mr. J. B. S. Rodrigo was instrumental in inaugurating this match in 1933. Out of the 53 matches played so far Cambrians have won six and Sebastianites two and the rest have been drawn. Prince of Wales recorded their last win in 1977 under Premlal Fernando while St. Sebastian's last win under Sarath Perera in 1966. This year, Cambrians will be held by Kavinda Silva and Amila Sanderuwan as his deputy. Sebastianites will be led by Sri Lanka schools cricketer Dunil Abeydeera and his deputy will be Neomal Fernando. Cambrians have played fifteen matches this season and have four outright win's, ten first innings win and they lost one on first innings. They passed the 300-run mark in seven matches and beat Royal and St. Thomas'. This is the first instance that they beat both these schools in the same year in their 108 year long cricket history. Sebastianites have played sixteen matches and have three outright win's, seven first innings wins while three matches have ended in no-decisions and lost three on first innings. Prince of Wales have six players who have played in last year's 'Big Match while the Sebs have five players from last year. Both teams are determined to get a positive result in this game and if the weather holds good, there will be an entertaining match. |
