Freezer technology to prevent waste of fish The wastage caused in the total output of fish in the country can be reduced to a great extent with the proper use of freezer technology, said the First Secretary (Development) Royal Norwegian Embassy, Colombo Christian Fougner, at a stakehoder meeting of fishing industry organised jointly by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) and the Norwegian Agency for Development Co-operation (NORAD). He said that 35 per cent of the fish output in the country was subject to waste due to unhygienic handling and lack of storage facilities and steps should be taken to minimise this. Norway had allocated an aid package of more than US$30 million to Sri Lanka with a major part of it channeled for the development of the fisheries industry. Sri Lanka should wisely utilise it and improve the basic infrastructure of the fishing industry to the maximum, to reap the best possible results. The Norwegian government was prepared to render its fullest co-operation and assistance towards this end, Fougner said. The Sri Lanka-Norway Industrial Co-operation Programme was initiated by NORAD in 1994 and it had reached the 3rd phase of operation. The programme functioned under the Ministry of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion with an Advisory Committee of representatives from the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI), Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) and the CCC/Sri Lanka-Nordic Business Council. He said that Norway would assist Sri Lanka by way of technology with funds from its private sector companies through business chambers and its related bodies to ensure transparency and fairness. He said that with the development of the basic infrastructure, it could promote value addition by the fishing sector, which had a great potential. HHS |
