Studio d'Art Group showcase their talent Eight talented artists who call themselves the Studio d'Art Group are holding this exhibition from March 19 to 22 (preview 19) between 10 am to 7.30 pm at the Harold Peiris Gallery (upstairs) Lionel Wendt Art Centre, Guilford Crescent, Colombo 7. They have been working very hard and studying together for many years.
They are students of Dora Tomoulic, of Croatia, who is well-known in the art circle in Sri Lanka. She was very keen that they help one another and present an exhibition someday, it has now become a reality. Dora had first taught them to master their drawings and then study the tones before beginning to paint. Prior to painting on canvas, they were taught how to select the material and how to prepare the canvas. Each lesson ended with theory and a discussion on great artists, formats etc. Thus her students were very knowledgeable in the history of great artists, their styles, colours, formats used etc. Notably the Studio d'Art Group have expressed their talents and the paintings are of very high standard. About 80 paintings will be exhibited using mediums such as pencil carbon on paper, charcoal, pastels, water colours, acrylics, oil, gouache, pen and ink, and mixed media. For the 'art lover' this exhibition presents a variety of high quality paintings ranging from copies of great artists (being part of their learning process) to originals. A brief note on them is as follows:- Channa - a science master by profession, and having taken part in many exhibitions, including his own in 2001 needs no introduction. Shazra & Nazra - the talented twins from the Maldives, are not novices in this field having held a very successful exhibition in Sri Lanka and two in the Maldives just last year, Ahalia - a student of architecture, she has a very creative mind enjoys paintings abstracts; Dina - a graphic designer, applies her geometrical designs in a very artistic manner, Gill - hailing from England, specialises in figures (mainly children) and has produced some wonderful compositions; Zinufa - a fabric artist and porcelain painter, she had held an exhibition along with her students on fabric art at the Wendt in March, 1995. She ventures out this time painting on canvas and prefers landscapes. Shymali - a landscape artist, she has turned out interesting paintings of figures with beautiful tones. - Gill Owens |
