Vedanayagam hopes for over 50,000 votes in Colombo by P. Krishnaswamy Noble Vedanayagam, the only Tamil candidate fielded by the UPFA for Colombo, said he was well aware of the problems faced by the Tamils of the Western Province as well as those of the North and East and expressed confidence of Colombo Tamils casting their vote for him. Optimistic that he would receive more than 55,000 Tamil votes, Vedanayagam also confided that President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga would nominate him as a member of the UPFA government's delegation for future peace talks with the LTTE. A businessman by profession, Vedanayagam was a member of the Colombo District Development Council for seven years from 1981. He contested the last General Elections on the PA ticket in Colombo although he was not successful. Addressing a news conference in Colombo last week to apprise the media of the main aspects of his election platform, Vedanayagam emphasised on his influential position in the UPFA with regard to addressing the problems of the Tamils in Colombo and other parts of the country. |
